A Calling of Black Mages

Dosbox is, as is often the case, sitting in the corner booth that was, until recently, reserved for a party, of which the Rock Gnome was a member, that has fallen out of favor with SEA as a whole due to their predatory recruitment practices. Dossy left that party a few months back, and he kept the spot in the divorce. Indeed, Borywick "DosBox" Rockborer has been a fixture in the Larder for years, and it would be weird if his presence were lacking...

Ever since DosBox left that party, however, the HyperVisor has been changing. Rather than the meek, submissive pushover, he has been starting to show a bit of pride in his work and his craft. Especially since he developed the new technique Gem Jitte. Currently, he has 8 Gem hands of amethyst working on crafting the same item: it appears to be some sort of lens. While the hands, floating above his head, continue to work, DosBox seems to be working on some sort of draft for a set of glasses.

One big idea of note: rather than the stocking cap with a gem on his head that he wore before, DosBox now wears a proper battlemage outfit, complete with wizarding hat, as if to announce to the world that he is a Black Mage of some kind....

    Enchantress, summoner... they do not by themselves seem to necessarily add up to black magic, or dark wizardry. But the imp, in muted black robes with the barest hint of red along the paneling, is here nontheless. Upon spotting Dos, she raises a hand in greeting. "You mind if I join?" She asks.

For the past two years, Tolbana has been the focus of Kita's existance. She has been the key architect to many of it's buildings, expansions, and decorations, making the once abandoned city a new home for many.

The black mage is most known, however, for her fashion (augmented by Gwen) and her artistry. The young woman walks in, her imp tail twitching behind her, wearing what could only be considered gothic flare, showing too much skin beneath dark layers. Could that neck-line get any deeper? Don't test Gwen, she probably /could/ make it so.

The artist just so happens to be perched on a stool nearby. A pencil scratches at a page in a book which has the distinctive markings of being some sort of relic. The target of her artistry: Borywick.

So, she may just be staring in his direction from time to time, before returning to her frantic sketchwork.

    While it has been a week or so since Asuna was last seen in these parts, she is back and working away in the Larder. Today being a bit special, she's got a special assistant working with her! The Lander child is helping her mother in the kitchen, standing on a stool and using a (very) small knife to cut vegetables.

    "Very good, honey! It's really important to carefully keep them the same size." Asuna looks over her daughter's work and nods her approval. But there are also people at the bar to care for, as well.

    "Now it's time for you to take a break. We have enough for the stew for now!"

    Asuna comes out to the bar a moment later. A quick look around and then she'll head towards Dosbox's table. "Hey Dossy, hey everyone! Would any of you like something? I've got a pizza about to come out, but I also can whip up the best pasta in all of ETO, if you want! I picked up some treats from Pela's Cafe in Shibuya on my way back, so I have a few of those if you are looking for something sweeter."

Dosbox perks his head up in surprise when Lauren says his name, then he gives a sheepish smile, "Oh, hi! Sure, have a seat. I am not sure if I will be the BEST company as I am -uh- busy," he points up at the Amethyst Gem Hands working on lenses, "But I would never say no to a comrade in arms. Lauren, right? We met at that Grunty herding job." He sighs, "That was... a humbling experience, let me tell you..."

Asuna calls DosBox's attention and mentions Pizza, and he begins to look real excited... But then he spots the little Taco and grins, "I WAS feeling pizza, but... Now I kind of want ramen... Can I have... BOOOOOOOOOOOTH?" He waggles his eyebrows at Asuna, kicking his feet that don't touch the floor.

As happenstance would have it, he just so happens to meet Kita's eyes as she looks up from her drawing. If this were an anime, a question mark would have popped over Dossy's head right now as he tilts his head to the side.

    "God, we did," Lauren says, ready to collapse into a chair at the very mention of the grunty drive. "All those /thorns/," She says, shuddering. "And I slipped up more than once." Suddenly, a hand to her mouth to stifle laughter. Until she sees Asuna, and then the same hand is used to wave. "Hello hello! My favorite dragon slayer!" She says, sliding into a seat across Dos. She follows his gaze to Kita, but she also spots the notebook, and an artificer knows better than when to interupt.
    Unless Lauren is interrupting and that person is in fact Dosbox.

"Hey Asuna." Kita offers without even looking up. She pushes her glasses up along her nose, waggling her fingers in what amounts to a half-wave before adding some additional details to the drawing. Only then does she look up, meeting Borywick's eyes.

Without really explaining, the Imp turns her book towards him, revealing a quite charming picture of him, detailed out in pencil. It has a surprising number of details, and seems intended to capture his best features while softening others. "You're a fascinating muse. I've been trying to figure out what you're up to for a while now."

Then, she actually turns to Asuna and offers a smile, "I'm fine for now. I don't want anything that might get a mess onto my book."

    "Both? Hmm, well, I better some things going for that! You are in luck, I have fresh buckwheat noodles. My assistant helped me with those!"

    Asuna nods to Kita, "Of course. I hope all is going well!" Turning to Lauren she laughs, "I'm just glad to be home. I have yet to check the jars. In the end, it may have all been for naught. But that's how these things go sometimes."

    Yui, being a big Dosbox fan, waves excitedly at the gnome. "Hello! Thank you for the gifts! I'm going to share them with other children at The Links, if that's okay. But I have a full set of dolls now!" She punctuates this with a deep bow.

    "And on that note... I'll get that ramen going. I won't disturb you. Feel free to shout if you need anything before I return with the ramen... and pizza."

    Asuna has had stranger orders, she supposes! Maybe she can find a way to somehow balance these two dishes... hm.

Dosbox blinks a couple of times at Kita. He points up, then looks up at the hands, "Oh. What I'm UP TO. Ah- I am currently processing lenses for what one might call an Optometric Lens Kit. It's for doctors to use so that we can streamline the creation of eyeglasses so that even commoner landers can afford sight correction. Right now, they're... Grinding lenses. That's about it. I have to perfect the process of making them so that they can be made quickly and exactly the same every time, otherwise there's no point."

He turns to Lauren and whispers quietly, "Hee hee... She called me a muse...!" He seems a little giddy about that part.

When the little Taco moseys up to him, he gives the tot a smile, "Ohhhhh... Is the Links a place with children? I thought it was a Zelda reference..." Little does Asuna or the small girl know... Dossy has no intention of eating the ramen. He plans to give it to Yui when it's made so he can RUIN HER DINNER! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

    Lauren leans in with a conspiratorial air to hear Dosbox. "I would pick a field before the artist finds one for you," She says, sotto voce, back at Dos with a wink. "Maybe Muse of Light? Muse of Noise?"

    Lauren snaps her fingers, and stray dark magic sparks glitter before fading. "I got it," She says. "Muse of Noise. No one's done that yet!"

    With a genuinely cheerful smile, she glances between Asuna and Kita for agreement.

"That makes sense." Kita replies, blinking behind her own lenses. "I've had these since before the Apocalypse, so I never really thought about all the effort that goes into them." Her delicate fingers touch the edges of the wire frames. "I wonder... do our prescriptions still change over time when we're in here?" Probably a question for Prophylaxis, or Uta, or someone else who is medically inclined.

"Well, you're interesting to draw. Interesting people are hard to come by. A lot of people's avatars are so plain and /boring/." There is a slight bit of complaint in Kita's voice at that. "Too much 'anime protagonist' in most people for my tastes."

She looks over at Yui, offering the child a small smile. Though she had likely heard rumors, it's hard to tell what Kita's thoughts on the matter are. Children aren't really in her wheelhouse.

"I can stop, though, if the drawing bothers you." Kita offers as she looks back to Dosbox.

    "That's where I go to school, Borywick," says Yui. She doesn't follow her mother to the kitchen right away. She's curious about what Kita is doing. But she's a bit too short to see her work. A moment later, Asuna calls out for her, as well.

    "Come on back now, honey. We have a few things to do!"

    It's not really a bring your child to work day, but employment in ETO is a bit... flexible where Asuna is concerned. When you are the only person in the world who can craft a perfect pasta, you get some perks. But more than that, Vertina is just really nice.

    Reluctantly, Yui heads back to the kitchen, pausing to turn back and wave to Dosbox again before she gets back to her work. Which from the sound of it is mostly cutting vegetables for the ramen.

Dosbox shakes his head emphatically, "No no, please continue! If I am inspiring your Artistic vision..." He looks up and to the left while pulling the brim of his hat over one eye, "Well, I have been called The SUPER Support before. Once. Ahem. So I love supporting people."

He side eyes Lauren while trying to give Kita a better angle, "I'd be the Muse of Gems, I think. Gems are my thing. I'm a jeweler with an emphasis on gems. Nobility wear my stuff, you know."

He waves to the little Taco as she runs back to the kitchen... Little does she know that her dinner is about to be... RUINED!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!

Briefly, Kita does shift the page so that Yui can get a look at what is on there. She offers the child a small smile, but doesn't distract her from returning to her mother.

Instead, she turns back to DosBox. "Have you ever considered utilizing gemstones for artistic endevors?" The Imp asks. "I imagine they could be used in statues, or for focuses for lights, or even for decoration in housing and architectural projects." Kita is always thinking about ways to improve the living conditions of those who dwell in the Tower.

"I used a few when I made the statue outside." Kita motions her pencil, likely referring to the very prominent statue at the heart of Tolbana. "I could certainly use someone who is able to craft both lenses /and/ carved gems. Especially if I'm going to further my own artistry. Though... first I have to track down something from the first Moonlight Artist."

Dosbox thinks on Kita's recommendation, "Hmmm... I haven't thought of using gems for housing. I usually work on a much SMALLER scale than that." He makes a short joke at his own expense with a wink. "That being said, if you have any requests, I am more than willing to work on any project. I... kind of came in late to the game when all of the statue making was happening, else I would have loved to be a part of it..." He sighs. More's the pity. "My current next project..." The rock gnome conjures three fist sized gem illusions, Onyx, Obsidian, and Dark Jade, "Is a branch of my Unlimited Gem Works Suite known as Dark Crystal... Ah! Unlimited Gem Works is my Combat Suite. I fight using enchanted gems, for the most part.

At the demonstration of Borywick's own spell abilities, Kita offers a soft smile, her teeth catching a small scar just over her lower lip. Scars like those, suggest that the girl's appearance may just be a body scan rather than anything system generated. "Show me yours, I'll show you mine."

She smirks, dismissing her sketchbook into her inventory and pulling out a far more arcane looking volume. It even has chains that keep it shut. She unlocks them with a twitch of her fingers and then the book falls open to a page with a graphic of purple fire. Touching the pages, she pulls it forth, causing a ball of dark fire to linger on her fingers, passed along each one. "This is how I fight."

The spell is extingished with a closing of her fingers, "And this..." The pages turn and there is a strange image of a dinosaur, but when she touches the page, it almost as if she is gathering essence from it, motioning her hand towards the nearby floor. A portal seems to open, a skeletal version of a raptor clambering out. The dark aura around it gives the impression of feathers and the sharp teeth clack together. A monster, clearly under her control.

Dosbox takes a couple of seconds before the innuendo hits him; he blushes red enough for it to show on his earthen brown skin, "I -ah- I am not quite sure what you mean by that!" He says in a bit of panic, but when Kita shows him images of her combat style, he switches to being mesmerized, "Whoa. That's... Wicked cool." He clears his throat after the show and gives a determined nod. Dismissing the Gem hands and storing in inventory all of the lenses they had been working on, Dosbox creates an illusion of his own about the size of his head which depicts his OWN fighting style.

He starts by showing his little tricks: a gem shield that he uses as platforms to climb to high places; gem hands that can trip up a foe as well as perform fine motor skills at a distance; a technique that removes ores and gems from the dirt without disturbing the earth which, in a pinch, can be used to throw shrapnel at an enemy. Each technique is more than just an attack: it also has a purpose.

He ends on what is labeled in the image as the Unlimited Gem Works Suite: nine fist-sized gems floating above DosBox, each performing a different action. A ruby gem fires a scorching ray at his foe while shielding Dossy with fire. A Sapphire gem sends a drowning water jet out while healing him. An Amber gem shoots out sharp gem shards while creating a defensive barrier around him. Each Gem does something different, and is patterned off of a different element.

The innuendo hits home and Kita just seems to smile at that, likely enjoying the reaction from Borywick. Resting her hand on her spell book, the Imp watches each display with rapt interest, "You've certainly got more variety than I do. I mostly use dark flames, summons, and a bit of arcane magic."

While still sitting, relaxed as you please, Kita snaps her fingers. Around her, a circle of sigils appears on the ground, slowly rotating. It looks exactly like you would expect a black magic buff effect to look like in a video game. You know, the kind of thing that black mages refuse to step out of because it will lower their DPS uptime.

"If you'd like, I could share a little bit of what I know, if you're willing to show me how to use some of those gem techniques of yours." Kita lifts her brow, her expression somehow suggestive. "I certainly don't mind someone... teaching me a few things."

    Asuna is an efficient chef. But she also has a child to keep busy, which means things are a bit slower to get done than normal, but the second that pizza is out of the oven the scent of authentic cheese, spices, and perfectly prepared grunty sausage hits the air. Knowing her business, Asuna prepared a few pies worth. Deep dish and otherwise, it's ready to go.

    The ramen is perfectly timed to finish up just as the pizza has rested enough to be served.

    With practiced ease, the Flash pops out of the kitchen and heads towards Borywick's table. She's cut him a slice of pizza to go with the bowl of ramen, which is complete with slices of boiled egg, buckwheat noodles, and thinly sliced vegetables.

    These are set down while Yui brings chopsticks and a large spoon for the ramen. Forks are strictly ignored when it comes to the pizza!

    "So, anything else you need while I'm here?" asks Asuna. She can tell they are talking shop here and is practicing the fine art of 'getting out of the way as swiftly as possible'.

Dosbox's shoulders go a little rigid. His mind starts swimming with what kind of things she plans on teaching him... He clears his throat, the blush returning to his cheeks, "Ah - Yeah, I am really interested in your technique. And - Well, I am flattered that you're interested in my Gem Works! I've put a lot of, well, work into it. I am especially interested in that flame you have, though... The aesthetic is really pleasing, you know?"

He notes Asuna's delivery of the food, "Ooo! Pizza! Hmm. But I realize that I am not hungry enough for the Ramen. Oh no. Maybe Taco can eat it for me? Wasting food would be HORRIBLE!" Heheheheheeh.... RUINED DINNER!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

"Tell you what..." Kita starts, leaning forward a little bit, "I've got a cottage just on the edge of town here in Tolbana. Just ask where the artist is, everyone knows me around here." Her lip quirks. "Come by sometime and we'll... talk shop. Exchange ideas and... techniques." Those little subtle pauses...

She /is/ inviting him back to her place. Mwahaha.

"Just make sure you wear something comfortable." She folds her spellbook closed, then dismisses it back into her inventory as well. "I would hate to damage anything too expensive while we train."

At his compliment, she smiles, "You like it? Back in the old days, they used to call me a witch. So, I decided to embrace it." It /does/ explain the theming.

    Asuna gives Dosbox a look. She shrugs it off and says, "You're still paying, of course." She doesn't give away food here!

    Yui looks confused and turns from Dosbox to her mother, and then looks over to Kita. The little Lander offers a shy wave. She is very curious what the Adventurers are talking about. It's probably grown up stuff! Which to a six-year-old always sounds so much cooler than it truly is. Oh! But it's a play date! That's very fun! Yui can ask Dossy all about it later! And ask about why his cheeks seem so red around Kita.

    "In any case, if you need anything else, let me know!" Asuna will again head away, this time to stop at the bar where she and Yui can share the ramen.

Dosbox goes a bit redder as Kita turns up the heat. He is certainly doing his best to assume that she's specifically talking about an exchange of ideas. With some quick thinking, he uses his own lack of self-confidence to convince himself that she couldn't mean any of the things she's saying in THAT way and, again clearing his throat, responds, "Well, you are certainly rocking the style. It suits you, I think." He smiles shyly before stratching the back of his head, "But yeah! I am all for expanding my repertoire, and I like sharing my knowledge about jewelry, too, so I am all for an idea and technique exchange! And we really should do it somewhere private. It might end up bad if we were to do it here." Unlike Kita, DosBox actually doesn't realize that he's doing innuendo. He literally just means that they might damage a table with dark fire or a scorching ray during practice.

DosBox puts his money where his mouth is, or rather, on the table FOR the things that will be going INTO his mouth. And for the ramen that will be going into Yui's. It's not ABOUT the money. It's about sending a MESSAGE. No dinner is safe from being ruined by the TRULY diabolical...

"Thank you. Can't say my choices made life easy, but I'd rather be me than live up to someone else's expectations." If Kita /is/ a body scan, that means she likely lived in Japan, with that wild hair, the piercings, and everything else that goes with it. She most certainly would not have fit into the standard, conservative lifestype.

Pushing herself up to her feet then, Kita re-summons her sketchbook, opening it easily to the right page she wants, and then starts to run her finger up and down it, folding it back and forth. Then, she uses the fold to neatly remove the page that has the pictire of Borywick on it.

"Here." The page is offered out to him, "Maybe this will help you see yourself in a different light." The Imp inclines her head.

Then, she looks over to Yui, "How about next time, I draw one for you, sweetheart?" The girl's blue eyes look from the child to Asuna, "That way your mom always has a picture of you she can take anywhere with her. Would you like that?"

    The offer of art does get Asuna's attention. It's something she has thought of. She has no pictures in this world. Yui is already growing up fast in her eyes.

    "I would like that," Asuna says seriously. "Very much."

    Yui bounces on her toes and calls out an excited, "YAY!" She really liked Kita's art, clearly. She can never be sure when her mother will say no to these kind of offers, though. Asuna is pretty protective.

    "Whenever you have time, let me know," Asuna says. "And let me know what you'd like to eat. I'd be happy to bring you something or have you over to our place."

Dosbox holds the picture up and gazes at the picture of himself that Kita had drawn, "Wicked..." He seems almost captivated by the art... "Thank you. I... Will hang this on my wall." He blinks a few times, pulling his attention back to the conversation, and hitting a bunch of buttons in his menu to push a friend request to Kita, "Ah! Here. This way we can better coordinate when we can meet up."

"It would absolutely be my pleasure." Kita offers, seeming to genuinely enjoy bringing those moments of happiness to people. "Nothing for me. I've got dinner waiting for me at home." With that the artist tucks a pencil behind one pointed ear.

"And you're quite welcome. Everyone deserves to see themselves in the best way." With that, delicate fingers accept the friend request. "We'll talk soon." And out she goes, dress swishing behind her and showing far, far too much leg.

    Asuna watches Kita head out, then turns her attention back to Dosbox. Since he's alone at the table, well, she and Yui can just join him! This is a wonderful opportunity to catch up with Borywick. And tease him in a friendly manner.

    "So... made a new friend, huh?" asks Asuna.

    Yui waves goodbye to Kita, "See you sometime soon!" she calls out. The little girl is pretty impressed, really. After she sits down, she says, "She has such pretty clothes! I want to dress like that when I'm older."

    Asuna, who definitely did notice the particular cut of that dress, silently prays that Yui does not adopt that style later. Klein is way too nice to be intimidating to overly-eager suitors. Asuna... she's not too nice to invite them to friendly duels in places far, far from the reach of guards... The Flash needs a few moments to work that all through her head.

Dosbox looks at his picture for a bit with a happy smile on his face before Asuna pops in and offers her friendly banter, "I mean, yeah, we're... going to share some magic with each other. It'll be fun." Dossy did, for once, notice the teasing overtone in Asuna's comment, but he skirted around it. He knew that Kita was just playing around. No one would be interested in a dwarf rock gnome in THAT way, after all. Even if Gwen made him a fancy outfit and Pela gave him the Image Treatment... Dossy knew his place.

    "Yeah..."

    Asuna gives Borywick a serious look. Then idly navigates her inventory to get a second bowl, spoon, and chopsticks. These she uses to split the food with her daughter. Yui likes ramen. So she's quite busy and she's daydreaming. Probably something about a pretty dress. Hopefully not about piercings. Asuna isn't ready for that parenting crisis yet!

    "Borywick, it's not impossible, you know. I get that for most guys it's all about looks. And there are girls like that, too, of course. But there are people who are attracted to things they can't quantify. So in short, don't think you know how this is going to go. Be prepared by knowing what /you/ want and focus on figuring out efficiently and respectfully if this new friend might be good for more than exchanging... techniques."

Dosbox looks embarrassed; once again, Asuna has seen right through her friend without him needing to say anything. He prods at the crust of his pizza absently as he responds, "Like, I don't mean... I am sure you're right, Asuna. Maybe I have had plenty of opportunites like what you're saying. I dunno. I am kind of... Oblivious. So even if something like that were to happen, it would probably go right over my head most of the time, you know?" He sighs, looking down at his tiny hand and grasping as if to give something a little squeeze, "And like, most of the time, knowing what you want and being able to get what you want are so far away from each other that the first one becomes moot." He grabs his pizza and takes a bite as he looks toward the door that Kita had used a moment or so ago. "I am just trying to remain... Grounded in reality, you know? Hope is great and all, but... It really hurts when it's taken away."

    "Hope is over-rated. Reality is what you seek. Hope grows in ambiguity. And the good thing is, you don't have to worry about what you are 'able to get' in this case. That's not up to you. Figure out if you want more and then be straight-forward. If it is a yes, great! If it is a no, there is no hope plaguing your mind. Instead, you just have a friend."

    Asuna watches Yui carefully and gives her a little bump. "You okay there, kiddo? Still thinking about Kita's dress?" But hopefully with an age-appropriate skirt!

    Yui is startled, then laughs softly. "Sorry, mama! I was just wondering what it is like to do so many interesting things. Adventurers are always making new magic, new fighting styles, and change everything around them. Like heroes. I want to do that."

Dosbox seems to begin to react to what Asuna said, "I..." And then he stops, giving a couple of nods. "Yeah, you're right. Be straight-forward. If it's a yes, great. If it's a no, I just have a friend." Is he talking about Kita right now? He looks a little serious for someone he just met today...

DosBox turns to address Yui with a tired smile on this face, "Being a hero is more than just fighting styles and magic, Taco. Like, right now, I am working on a project that will make it so everyone can wear glasses that needs them, regardless of price. Your mama just created an entirely new style of cooking. There are so many great things that happen every day besides fighting. I think those are much more cool, don't you?"

    "And 'just' a friend is pretty darn good, too," adds Asuna. "Though I am obviously a big fan of the more than friend space. I think you just need to be clear with your intentions. Bold, maybe, but respectfully so. I never cared for the dance of hints and uncertainties. Besides, that looked pretty flirty. You navigated it well enough. You are totally in the right to want clarity."

    Yui, who is not and has never been 'Taco', nods. "She was very nice. And she drew a picture of your face. At school an artist told me that when you learn to draw faces, everyone will start to seem beautiful."

    Asuna grins, looking over to her daughter. She's impressed.

    "And I know that heroes do all sorts of things, but I want to be a samurai kind of hero!" Yui is completely fixed on that one.

Dosbox nods to Asuna, "You're right, Asuna. Obviously. I have so many more friends than I had just 6 months ago. I have been blessed with the kindness of those who care about me. I have just been... so lucky lately. " Dossy gives a little sniffle and looks away for a second. Before turning back with a smile, "So like, maybe the world is up. Maybe spring has finally come for this little rock gnome. Who knows?" He does a corny arm pump to show enthusiasm.

To Yui he says, "You know, Samurai are widely known for their calligraphy, haiku's, tea ceremonies... A Samurai is a warrior of Culture and Honor. You have to be ready to prepare those things too. And remember, fighting others is something we HAVE to do, not something that we should WANT to do.

    "But mama duels for fun," points out Yui. "The tournament was fun. And that was just fighting because people liked it! So I can do that."

    Asuna laugh softly. "The Links has taught my little girl a lot. She's pretty hard to correct sometimes! So I just cheat and tickle her. But it's also not the same for a Lander as it is with Adventurers."

    Yui nods, accepting her mother's correction. And proving that she can listen, too! She focuses on her ramen and being hungry, empties her bowl. There is perhaps a two second delay before Asuna is deftly moving more of her food into her daughter's bowl.

    "The world may be up. But I would say that Kita is pretty unique. I'm pretty sure that's the real her. If that's true, well, she lives life in her own way."

Dosbox nods with a smile, "I mean, I have been living my life in my own way, too. Lately. With a lot of help. So good for her!" Dossy finishes up his pizza as well, and says a brief prayer to thank the pizza for its sacrifice. "The Tournament... is a little bit more complicated than playing for fun, but... I get what you mean, Taco. All sorts of people like doing all sorts of different things."

    "Well, you keep living it. Just enjoy it, express yourself, be respectful." Asuna grins and adds, "Or I'll kick your butt."
