Duty Session 171: Totally Typical Tomb

Landers don't leave bodies to bury, but graveyards are still created as a place for them to mourn the departed. For some reason these places are randomly becoming infested with undead. The Hunter's Guild has an open quest available for clearing these infestations.

Shiruba

Shiruba has taken up post at the gates to the graveyard while waiting for the others responding the recent occurancy of this surprisingly multi-faceted duty. But she'll take an infested cemetary for a break from what's going on over in Ninetails, it's easier to work on anti-undead strategies in a less intense situation like this. She's got her bow ready in hand and ears on high alert while she waits though. Just because that fog laying lightly over the area is giving her the heebie jeebies even if it isn't the freaky obscuring mess the other undead use.
Hifumi

Hifumi arrives, still dressed for work, one of these days he'll buy proper armor, but most of his money just goes back into the Ryoken. A small dragon made of flowers and leaves perches on his shoulder. The middle aged chef is puffing on a kiseru, the light trail of tobacco smoke drifting above him. "Hey, heard we had some undead keeping my neighbors from getting to visit with relatives." he says with a bit of a smile. "I brought binto, this one is special, it's got some of my first kimchi in it."

Another day, another gaggle of ghouls to deflagrate. Prophylaxis arrives with his usual labcoat and his usual hat and his usual vaguely unsettling shark-toothed smile. It goes ~ting~ as it sparkles, just once, amidst the cloying gloom. "It looks like I'm back here again! How fortuitous, I've been looking for some particularly dark magic for my latest project! Let us away, friends, and punch some zombies until they give over all their grave goods!"
Tenko

"This looks ominous." The kitsune says to no one in particular as she joins the group in front of the tomb. Weapons sheathed, she none the less keeps one hand on her katana as she bows in greeting to the gathered folks, "I will do my best to be of assistance to you while we are in there."
Giganpor
Overworld - -4 - 0 - 0

A bit of a late arrival, Giganpor arrives in human form, complete with armor and weapon in hand. "I heard there was some undead trouble in the cemeteries? Mind if I tag along?"

Yep. Giganpor's armed. And he does look ready to bash in some undead. Hammer-axe spear in hand and ready to take it to them. He at lesat doesn't look fresh out of the forge or anything at the moment. Just more warrior in look.
Miho

Miho had heard about the run and was here as well. "Given the cocern with the undead armies? Takeing care of even small issues like this could help and deny them more recuits after all." She tilts her head seemiungly in agreement with her partner in crime. Or is that arms dealing? It's arms dealing all right. Her tail swishes a bit as she looks the place over. "So any idea what sorts of monsters are lurking in here?"
Setsuna

Setsuna meanders towards the group gathering to raid the tomb beneath the cemetary again and looks around. He had been here a couple of times now and each time another part of the tomb seems to reveal itself. Takinga a look at the group he nods a greeting and speaks up to answer Miho's question, " Well the one that comes to mind first is the rotten smelling flesh golem creation. Only thing I have smelled that smelled worse is a burning rotten smelling flesh golem."

Hey Hifumi is here, that means they don't have to worry about provisions! Just the thought of some of that authentic cuisine gets a few wags out of the wolfgirl's tail before she forces herself to focus once more, and give everyone else a nod in return. "Yeah. These instances keep taking over graveyards and the Landers can't engage in their normal traditions of honoring the departed. It's not a good thing for moral, ritual is important to them even if they don't have bodies to bury."

She turns to open the gates, which naturally creak ominously as they swing aside, even though they look to be in perfectly find condition. Someone paid attention to setting atmosphere. "Everyone ready?" The wolven Cait Sith heads inside.

For once they're not mobbed by skeleton hordes or zombie dogs upon entering. It's quiet. Up until the *doot doot doot* can be heard from a large skeleton ambling about, playing a mind numbing song on a trumpet despite not having lips. Or lungs. It's got to be magical. Much like the effect it's having if someone doesn't shut him up quickly.
Hifumi

Hifumi shakes his head and covers one ear, the other hand occupied with his pipe. "OOoh that's just dreadful... Snapdragon, go take care of that guy." he says the little flower drake opening it's mouth in a silent 'rawer' before launching at the skeleton. The little summon flies back and forth swatting the trumpet out of position with its claws interupting the terrible Doot Doot if not actually stopping the skeleton.
Giganpor

The sound of music has Giganpor stopping. And well... he looks at the trumpet playing skeleton. Just glares. Then opens his inventory. And pulls out a throwing axe. He chunks it at the skeleton, missing badly. And that just seems to irritate him more.

Did anyone ever wonder just what is in Giganpor's inventory? Because seriously, they don't have to now. He starts to toss just about anything and everything, even a kitchen sink at the skeleton trumpeter. Varieties of swords, axes, hammers, and a kitchen sink by the time he's done. And the kitchen sink even misses he's so mad at the thing.

"Why do these things always have to have some sort of music playing effect creature!?" He growls at the skeleton.
Tenko
Overworld - -4 - 0 - 0

Tenko spots the skeleton playing the trumpet. An interesting tune, even if it must be magical because there's no physical way that skeleton is playing a trumpet. Still, she moves towards it, and then builds a small fireball in her hand. She lobs it as she gets close, aiming for the trumpet itself in order to try to melt it down with the intense heat of the flames and keep it from calling for help.
Setsuna

Setsuna was ready, he was absolutely ready, completely focused and aware. As they come upon the playing skeleton, Setsuna gets a wonderful idea and attempts to raise his buddies and pals. "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, your pal is trying to get his band back together." An attempt to summon goes out and well, it just, its better that these failed things don't last long as the skeleton thing that comes up is an amalgamation of all the band members and is quickly dismissed. "Ok now I am clear and focuse and ready ." Really Setsuna is ready now.

"Right, next time we run into a shambling mound of flesh, use enough fire to carbonize it completely. Got it~" Prophylaxis may or may not have been responsible for setting said shambling flesh mound on fire.

(He was definitely, absolutely responsible for doing this thing)

But there's no time to dawdle! Adventure is afoot! But... Something is wrong. Very wrong. Or maybe-- very right??

"Hm, you know," Prophylaxis says as a jaunty tune cuts through the grim atmosphere of the graveyard like a hot knife through a waxy corpse, "I don't remember there being a BGM like this the last time we were... Ah."

There's a skeleton there.

He's dooting as hard as he can.

Prophylaxis looks... conflicted? "I mean, we could shoot him," he suggests, then shrugs, "But he looks like he's trying so hard! I'm honestly impressed he can play the trumpet properly without any actual lips!!"
Miho

Miho has noticed there is quite the group forming fror this run, Miho seems to be confident abotu the group's chances. She wioll have here bow out and at the ready. "Yeah I get how that goes."

She pauses for a moment as she readies her bow as she fgoes in and she just stares at the bard skeletons as the doot at them.

"Oh for the love of the gods? Really!?"

She'll just start trying to pick the things off to get them to stop.
Shiruba

The party doesn't have a bard of their own to counter the song, so they seem to agree on handling this problem from afar. The dootmeister dances around the random things being thrown from Giganpor's inventory, but it gives the little plant-dragon a chance to get close and start messing with the skeleton's hands and instrument. Then Tenko throws a heated bad review that causes the metal to warp enough that the sound coming out of it has lost it's mizmerizing effect.

Shiruba had actually started to slouch a little, her sensative hearing picking up the subliminal effect a little too well, until the warping heat stops it and she snaps back to her senses. "Gah!" She conjures up a ball of mud and throws it into the bell of the trumpet to completely clog it up. "Musical monsters are almost as bad as tentacle ones!" Miho follows suit, her shot being the one to finally knock the trumpet out of it's boney hands. Doot-skeleton shakes a fist angerly at the party, clattering something that's probably the skeleton version of "Everyone's a critic!" and then running off before he gets toasted like his instrument did.

The party is able to move on.. but now that her head is back in the game Shiruba's ears snap upright and she barks "Look out!" before kippuping aside of an arrow wizzing through the air! Looks like more skeletons, these ones proper archers, have taken up sentry over the main mausoleum. "At least there's no more trumpets..."
Giganpor
Overworld - -4 - 0 - 0

Giganpor grumbles a little at the music, then sighs when he's over. Of course, then there's a new problem. Always is!

And an arrow barely misses his hair as he leans to one side. "I really need to keep Flaris on hand." He begins to move through the arrows, showing that perhaps Giganpor's a lot more than just the shield he carries. He barely uses it as he steps, bends one way, then another, and pretty much just returns the occasional fire with a light blast from his shield. "C'mon, right here! You guys couldn't have been good shots even alive!" He taunts at the skeletons.
Setsuna

Setsuna feels the arrow whiz by his ear and cast a glance at Shiruba, " To be fair I think I prefer the trumpet." Raising his staff in the air the summoner speaks, " I call upon mother of nature, send us a strong wind." The mages spell goes off as a strong wind begins to blow through the area, knocking arrows off course , giving an easier time to navigate through the firing range.
Hifumi
Overworld - -4 - 0 - 0

Hifumi keeps smoking his pipe. Being a chloromancer means not having to actually do your own fighting. "Snapdragon... burn 'em down." he says pointing his pipe at the skeletons. The dragon launching off his shoulder and flying up high in a slow spiral before diving down, it's little petal snout opening wide, before gouts of roar out like he's a real dragon. The flames licking over the archers, and while the bones might be safe from the temperatures that Snapdragon can reach, their bows might be in serious danger.
Prophylaxis

Prophylaxis frowns as the dootmeister disappears into the distance, sans trumpet. "Well," he says with a huff, "Now I feel bad."

No time to stew on it, though. An arrow sails by his head and just misses skewering his face by inches! As a wizard of no small amount of personal dignity, Prophylaxis... does not dodge. Not for mere arrows! Instead, walls of pure energy briefly materializes around each member of the party, shielding them from incoming projectiles...! "Don't feel bad enough to /not/ blast these things into calcium deposits. Come forth, my loot piƱatas! Naught but death to I bring!"

Nevermind that they're all skeletons and thus already dead. Such things are trifling details! They all get blasted by magic missile swarms regardless.
Tenko

The kitsune is fast, that much is clear. She rapidly dodges arrows, seeming to blink out of the way of them just before they make contact with her. She's doing this to get their attention so the other members of the team can take out the ranged opponents. It's easy enough for her to keep it up until they're all down.
Miho
Overworld - -4 - 0 - 0

Miho can only counter the song in trying to take the one behind it out. The dootmesiter shows it has somehting few monsters, living or undead have. The sense to run and Miho has no desire to hunt this one down however there are more now and these ones have bows. Miho dodges without thinking too much about it and returns fire.

"Do we even have skeletons here? Where do these things come from!"

She will keep shooting till none of them are left...
Shiruba

Sometimes being the Tank is just keeping the enemies' attention divided, which is exactly what Giganpor and Tenko do. They go in opposite directions and the skeletons split their focus trying to follow and shoot them, leaving a nice corridor for the others to deal with the matter. Wind scatters arrows and as skeletons are fairly light knocks several of them off-balance, followed by the bombardment of arcane missiles. It gives Hifumi's little friend an opening to move in closer and set them on fire, with supporting fire from Shiruba and Miho after she's taken cover. Teamwork makes it a short and fairly painless matter of dealing with the would-be guards.

As she's more or less taken up the roll of Party Leader Shiruba leads the way inside the mausoleum and down the winding stairs deeper inside. Until they finally come to a chamber with one lone white-clad stringy haired zombie slouched in the center of the room. "One? That's i--" Shiruba cuts herself off with a yelp as the zombie spins her head around and starts screaming in jump-scare timing.

Which starts to attract other zombies rumbling into the room.

"Oh this is not good!" Shiruba mutters as she recomposes herself and draws back a few magic arrows in her bow. "Don't let dealing with the adds distract you from stopping that screamer before she calls too many more!"
Tenko
Overworld - -4 - 0 - 0

The kitsune isn't going to wait this time, not when there's a good chance to take this thing out before it can cause too much trouble for the party. Quickly dashing to the side, she doesn't draw her weapon, needing to keep her distance to avoid being killed by this thing.

Instead using both hands, she forms a fireball between both of her hands, growing it to a large side, before she hurls it with both hands in the direction of the zombie, trying to torch it.
Giganpor
Overworld - -4 - 0 - 0

Well, he's already party tank. And with the incoming zombies, and not wanting to deal with a screaming head-spinner of a zombie, Giganpor moves to block off the various zombie adds that are incoming.

"Someone shut that thing up before we get overwhelmed!" He calls back, using a combination of shield and weapon to hold back the incoming zombies as he bashes them away with his buckler or slices them in half. Sometimes literally, and sometimes just at the waist. Seriously, hard to swing big weapons in this place!
Miho

While Miho can tank it's not her main focus, she will happily off tank when needed. Today isn't one of those days at this rate as now some sort of crazy monster rock band it looked like. "What is this the ungrateful undead!?"

She calls out and will, move in drawing her katana and will parry attacks while she gets in close enough to try to behead the screaming zombie.
Prophylaxis

"I'm sure we have skeletons," Prophylaxis answers Miho, "If we didn't, we wouldn't be able to break our bones! And I'm almost positive that such 'debuffs' do exist here."

An awful sound cuts him off.

"Well, at least it isn't another one of those shambling meat-sacks," Prophylaxis grumbles as the monster's nail-on-a-chalkboard voice screeches in his ears. He has to pull his hat down over his head to keep that overly-sensitive beastkin hearing from incapacitating him-- and it's no easy task! Especially not when he can /also/ hear a horde of shambling undead scrambling towards the sound of that awful wailing.

"None of that," he declares, slamming a foot into the masonry. Suddenly, walls of solid rock shoot up out of the stonework near each passageway, preventing that tide of undeath from sweeping over them all. Wall of stone turns out to still be a very useful spell, though this particular version is a ramshackle, improvised application of a very different and much more temporary spell. "Kill it quick," the Doctor orders, "I'll keep these barricades up as long as I can."
Hifumi

Hifumi sees that there are zombies coming from every entrance. "Snapdragon, block that door!" he says pointing at one of the un-guarded doors. The little drake nods and flaps over, but rather than strafing or otherwise attacking zombies directly the little summon sinks it's claws into the floor while Hifumi quickly works on some runes in the air around the door. "Okay little buddy, light it up." he says, and the drake breaths a gout of nearly liquid fire into the arrangement of runes. the door and several feet back burst into a roiling redorange blaze. "I'll hold this door, keep it up little buddy." he says working with the drake to keep a steady wall of fire trapped in the door burning adds as they try to break into the room.

Setsuna watches the banshee wanna be zombie start to scream her head off and winces in pain, " I now understand how Ms. Driscoil felt." Shiruba

A sub-boss that summons mobs to fight for them ... can only do so much when multiple people throw up defensive stances, elemental barriers and huge shields, effectively walling off the mobs from getting into the main chamber. Shiruba stays back as a ranger should, picking off the few walking corpses that manage to squirm by the defenders.

It leaves the screamer wide open without a mob to shield her, which Tenko capitalizes on by setting off a heavenly fireball in her face, reducing the screamer to ashes. Once she's gone, the zombies stop swarming and are easily stomped back into submission.

The group proceeds into the next chamber... only for it to lock shut on them, while some disembodied voice mocks them over it. Narrows her eyes at the flaming pit, and then the door, analyzing the environment like a good leader. "Nevermind the voice, whoever designed this chamber made a really big mistake..."

Setsuna looks at the fire and then at the key in the fire and blinks for a moment "I mean couldn't you just..." Taking another moment the man looks at the corner and knocks his staff on the skeleton, " Hey wake up." The skeleton stands and salutes making a hollow noise before he ushers towards the fire. " Your sacrifice is needed." The skeleton would salute once more before running headfirst into the pedastal trying to get the key for the group.
Prophylaxis

"I mean," Prophylaxis answers the disembodied voice in the sky with the greatest of shrugs. But really it's just a motion to conjure into his hand... The Newbie's First Runemastering Staff. It's literally just a long metal rod. "The fire doesn't melt the key, right? So like, this should be fine?"

And then he just...

Pokes the key out from the fire.

Like, he just shoves it right out of there, because it's not even being tied down by anything.
Giganpor
Overworld - -4 - 0 - 0

Giganpor hums, looking at the metal door. He walks up to it, looking it over, then turns to look at Miho. "By the way, Miho. I don't think I showed off before." He sets the hammer-axe spear across his back, then brings up his simple, ordinary smithing hammer.

"Long hours of training paid off in ways that even I did not expect. The Tradesmen of the Ninetails do good work, but more so we do good work as it is." He starts to tap the bands around the door. Slowly tapping as he doesn't pay much attention. Each tap, seems to make the door shudder. Pins start to loosen, then fall out impossibly as he goes along the hinges, then the lock itself.

Whatever Giganpor is doing, the obvious thing might as well be the impossible as pins and bolts literally reshape themselves. It's literally impossible that this should be happening in video game context, let alone real life.

And a final strike of the smithing hammer on the door has all the pins and bolts shaking literally out so the door is only held by it's hinges. "I call it the Riddle of Steel. The ability to shape metal better than our simple hammer strikes ever could. Even if we can't use it in the real world, here it makes it both easier and more unique as it works on any metal, any armor. Even ones that are worn."

Stepping back from it, Giganpor looks over to see what the others have been up to while he was busy literally dismantling the door practically.
Miho

What comes next isn't quite what Miho expected to happen, a trap like this. She would seem concerned about this whole affair then something strikes her as she has an idea o how to recover the key. She'll put her weapons away. The katana is sheathed and then molten looking tattoos flare up from her hand all the way up to her shoulders. She's got a plan here and she'll move towards it. When she uses these tatoos she can handle hot metal and shape it like 's butter she confident to get the key it doesn't sadly go so well while she does not harm herself she's just not quite able to reach ... it. Her arms are just a bit ... too short to reach it...
Hifumi

Hifumi looks at the key, looks at the door... looks at the key... "Snap dragon, lets do something about this door." he says and he and the little drake start working on prying the hinge loose.
Tenko

Tenko has a plan for how to get the key off of the pedistal. She moves towards it, slowly, intently, and then stops before it. She reaches over with her right hand to her katana at her hip, and then shifts her weight and slashes through the air in one quick strike at the base, just under the flame. She then turns and sheathes her blade, stepping away from it. Her weapon should have cut through it and made the key fall free.

If it worked.
Shiruba
Overworld - -4 - 0 - 0

The first thing Miho would notice upon reaching into the flame is that it doesn't actually feel like fire in any sort of way she's familiar with. There's none of the heat or burning that her special talent protects her from. She can't quite reach the key itself, but that sensation is the first clue there is something off about all this.

Meanwhile Giganpor gets a bit scenery chewing, both literally and verbally, as he uses his special technique to reshape pins and lock fasteners to let loose of their hold on the door. It might not seem like much by Hifumi's idea does contribue, as it helps knock things loose once their form has changed from what fits in the holes they occupy. "What are you doing... Hey, that's cheating!" depands the unseen voice. Which distracts it from the people working at the pedestal.

The Good Doctor uses a rod to poke at the key. Tenko tries flashy swipes to blow it out of it's spot. Nothing seems to work... and the reason becomes apparent when Setsuna sends a zombie charging into the pedestal. The entire thing falls over with a crunch, and instead of tumbling out of the fallen inset the key, and the flames, just flicker out of existance. It was a magical illusion all along!

Shiruba looks at the fallen pedestal, then at what Giganpor and Hifumi are doing at the door, and her expression lights up. "They may have that loosening apart, but it's still going to need to be knocked open. Everyone grab on, or get your summon to, and we'll make use of this fake clue after all." Once every lifts up the pedestal they can use it to ram down the now unhinged door with little trouble.

The door slamming down into the next chamber sends loose papers scattering. Which fall to the ground. Except for the one book floating in the air, flipping it's pages rapidly. And then several of papers on the floor burn away, smoke and shadows rising up from them to form into spectral version of the Adventurers, ready to fight.

"Okay, now things just got really weird," Shiruba mutters. "If you ever wanted to beat up yourself, now is your chance."

Giganpor looks to the mirror images as they enter the room. Then he looks to his side, and shakes his head, "Yeah, let's not." His shield glows as he pulls out his hammer-axe spear and simply begins to walk forward. A summoning circle appears under himself and comes up to change him into his Were Lion form. Granit appears on his shoulder and also glows green.

Each step he takes shakes the ground in front of him. His own double looks to be having trouble standing, as is all the others as he just lets the literal upheaving ground cause unbalance and everything else for them. "Oh, someone get the spell or whatever is causing this? Or just kill yourself?"

He proceeds to do so against himself since it's obvious this thing's not going to solve itself so easily.

Magical trickery? An illusion spell!? How nefarious can one disembodied voice be!?

Unfortunately for it, the disembodied voice is just that. Something that it wholly incapable of actually doing anything to stop the party from just... taking the door down.

Hence, they move on, and find something that Prophylaxis seems to find... familiar. "I suggest against killing yourself," he says as his own double appears. "The book is the source of this magic. Destroy the grimoire or force it to retreat, and the duplicates will fall!"

Not that he's going to be of much help doing so. The fireball Prophylaxis hurls at the tome is intercepted by Shadow Prophylaxis' own spell. The doctor frowns at his duplicate, before the two magi engage in what can only be described as a counterspell cascade.

He's probably going to be occupied for a while.

It seems that Tenko and her evil double will have to have a traditional samurai duel. The two of them seem quite evenly matched, quickly rushing at each other with slashes, neither going down after the original hit, so turning and clashing blades.

Sparks fly as the two of them strike again and again, blades flashing. Seems part of the problem with being a highly trained Samurai is that when you go against your exact double, you wind up with a stalemate.

"Destroying Angel, come forth." he says... now that's an ominous name for a summon, until a small hedgehog appears at his feet. "Get it Angel!" he says pointing at the book. The little hedgehog runs forward, a shadow copy of it running from Hifumi's alternate, the two mushroom critters coliding and exploding in a cloud of spores. That manages to somehow destablize the roof enough that Hifumi and his doppleganger end up burried in rubble both effectively out of the fight even if he didn't manage any damage to the book.

She can't quite place it, she'll think on it later but damn Giga got creative there and she seems to approve of the whole affair.

"It's creative thinking Shiruba! Shush!"

Having to fight yourself is both a blessing and a curse. You know everything you can do, but your opponent can literally do everything you know you can do so it balances out. But knowing what is coming is why Shiruba dives to the side and rolls out of the way of the electrified arrow that was aimed at her head. She rolls past the lecturn, and on the other side brings up her own bow and arrow to fire at her counterpart. Who of course also dodges out of the way, and the arrow thunks into the wall.

Which in a roundabout way works anyways, as the thorny vines still erupt from the wall, but they only succeed in proving to be a hazard instead of actually grabbing the faux-Shiruba as the two continues to dodge and shoot back and forth.

While everyone else deals with their doubles Setsuna gets on top of the core of the problem, managing to grab the tome and struggle with it to expose it's pages. Horrible arcane words are spoken, and the replications suddenly screech and shudder before poofing in clouds of purple supernatural flames like what originally burned the pages to form them.

The tome manages to wretch itself free of Setsuna's grasp afterwards, though several of it's pages are pulled free and flutter about as it disappears into a portal. With it gone, the pages do nothing but fall to floor to be picked up by the heroes.

"That... was oddly one of the hardest fights I've ever had. You think you know everything to deal with yourself, but.." The page is stuffed in her inventory. She'll figure out what to do with it later. "... Looks like we need to dig Hifumi out -again- before we leave..."

Setsuna stands up slowly and grabs one of the pages on the grund and shakes his head. "Someone should have told me my clothes looked so bad." I would suggest no one read the spell from page 184 , or else well...just don't" He folds his page and stuffs it in his pocket, another thing for the storage locker.
Prophylaxis
Overworld - -4 - 0 - 0

Sadly for the good doctor, he's been here before! Not that it would have necessarily stopped him from acquiring another page, per se. What does, though, is the FIREBALL COMPETITION that goes on between the two Prophylaxi up until the very end of the fight, when the shadow doctor disintegrates and the true doctor slumps to the ground with an empty mana pool and a few scorched scraps of paper fluttering uselessly around him.

"Gonna... gonna need a sec," he wheezes, "OOM."
Hifumi

Hifumi's foot twitches, he's alive... at least he always seems to live through the process of being burried in rubble, or ... well whatever happens to be around. Snapdragon works with its little claws moving dirt and rocks to try and get its master out of the situation he's found himself in far too many times.

Miho says "Well that was an experiance..." Miho's looking a smidge embrassed as she gets ofgf the flor from where she wa ifthing her clone who has exploded in a shower of shards.

"We should get him out yes he is the best chef in the alliance you know."

She'll moveto help free Hifumi as needed.

"Don't worry we can get him to cook something for us in thanks right?!"

she's clearly mostly joking, maybe...hey she loves his food .
