A Quiet Day In Shibuya

Miyako
Shibuya - Main Square

It's been several weeks since Shibuya was officially 'cleared', and businesses are starting to pop up to service the Adventurers and others that have been using the city as their base. One of the more prominent of these are taverns, which is where Miyako can be found tonight.

Unusually, she isn't the one providing music to entertain the patrons. That role seems to have fallen to another bard, who has just announced that he's taking a break for a drink and some stew, so things get quiet for a few minutes... until people go back to chatting among themselves, then a bit of a din rises.

Miyako herself is sitting off in another corner, her space defined by a pitcher of beer and a lantern, with a stack of papers before her. Every few moments, she dips her pen and writes down a few lines of text, then squints as she thinks about what to write next.

Where there's Miyako, there's more than likely Kotono nearby.

Or at least there should be, right?

The door opens and in comes Kotono, looking a little worn out, but otherwise looking like her usual self. She starts to smile at Miyako, but then frowns as she notices that her friend is rather busy right now. Instead of being loud and boisterous and possibly interrupting Miyako, Kotono walks over quietly to see what she's doing.
Merek
Shibuya - Main Square

Merek makes a way along into Shibuya as well as that tavern while he finds a place to wave to Miyako, he nods a bit to Kotono.

Miyako looks up as she notices presence near, and nods pleasantly. "Ko-chan, Merek. Good to see friends again. I hope you've both been well?" She blots her pen on a scrap of paper, then stoppers the ink bottle and sets both aside.

The papers before her seem to be covered in a collection of song lyrics, mostly in English - some recognizeable as songs she's performed in taverns like this one.

"Hello Miyako," Kotono says with a smile. "Good to see you too." She gives a nod to Merek as well. "Nice to be among friends. Personally, I was just doing some solo stuff before I decided to stop in here." She giggles a little. "Good thing I did, I picked the right spot."
Merek

"You all are alright?" Merek asks then to Miyako as well as to Kotono. The man nods a little bit, "I am, well thinking about things," the man notes a little.

Miyako nods, a little smile touching her lips as she leans back in her seat. "I'm doing well, it's about time I took a break anyway." She takes the pitcher and fills her tankard, then takes a drink. "Have a seat, have a beer," she offers.

Returning from the bar with a pitcher of root beer, Kotono pours herself a mug. "I prefer the lighter kind, but thanks anyway," She says with a smirk before raising in a mock toast. With that, she then looks to Miyako. "Breaks are always important. You know, all that stuff about all work and no play, right?" Her demeanor turns a little serious as she looks to Merek. "What's going on?"

"I don't know, I'm just drinking," Merek then notes to Kotono, and nods while he takes a look to Miyako, "Thank you," he says, while he takes a drink from the beer.

"Got a couple of irons in the fire," Miyako answers, setting down her mug to take a brief stretch. "Right now I'm working on music. Writing down everything I can remember. Lyrics, chords, tunes, histories. Might be able to publish some of it, might just spread it around, we'll see how much interest there is."

She gestures towards the pile of paper. "I want to get everyone I can to contribute. Think of it as our very own Gutenberg project. Get everything we can record, written down, just in case... so that it's not forgotten, we don't forget our roots even in this new world."

This stimulates Kotono to lean in closer and listen intently to what Miyako is saying. "That's... a very good point. I never thought of that actually." She bites her lip a little. "Although the premise of writing with a feather and ink isn't exactly appealing, but oh well." She shrugs. "If people in the past could do it, I suppose I can."

"You can make a pen, it's not all that difficult, although the materials might be special," Merek notes, while he nods a little bit, to the two.

Miyako smiles and reaches over to pat Kotono's hand. "It's not hard to learn, just takes practice. And it helps if you get someone to teach you, I had a nice chat with one of the locals about it."

She hmms as Merek puts in his suggestion. "I certainly wouldn't mind a proper pen, and it's not like I can't afford mats. Know any crafters who can make them?"
Kotono

"Always good to learn something new I suppose?" Kotono says, giggling at the pat, before sipping her root beer again. "I have the money too, but honestly, I'd like to give it a try and see what happens." Her tone turns a little serious again. "Because what you're suggesting, Miyako, sounds like a very good idea."
Merek

"Well, it depends. Anyway, I think it's best to use what most people do, while we're learning," Merek notes, nodding a little bit along to the two in thought.

Miyako shrugs, nods. "Yeah. So, Ko-chan, what kind of music do you like? What did you listen to on the outside?" She taps the quill pen against the pile of paper. "I was never into a lot of modern music, it's mostly old folkie stuff for me."
Kotono

"I can appreciate how some people don't appreciate today's music. To be honest, I've always enjoyed a lot of J-Pop songs. Sometimes when I'm practicing I would put on my favorite songs and sing along while practicing my routines." Kotono stretches her arms over her head. "The music really gets to you, honestly."
Merek

"I need to be about, you all take care and all," Merek notes then to the two and waves.

Miyako nods. "Yeah, I had a few bands I liked -- fripside, Wagakki, that kind of thing. But the majority was older stuff. Irish, English, New England... a lot of old sailor tunes, that kind of thing."

She hums for a moment, then sings a verse. It's a slow, dark, doldrum of a song, like a foggy night without a breath of wind.

./~ All you Maine men, proud and young
./~ When you run your Easting down
./~ Don't go down, to Fundy Bay,
./~ She'll wear your tide away
        ./~ Fundy's long, and Fundy's wide
./~ Fundy's fog and rain and tide
./~ Never see the sun or sky,
./~ Just the green wave rollin' by....

She breaks off as Merek waves and announces his departure. "Thanks for dropping by. Check back in a day or two, I'm putting a little trip into the catacombs together. Maybe we can find a new dungeon or something."
Kotono

"Have a good day," Kotono says as she waves to Merek before looking to Miyako. She nods her head in time to the music, even though there's no percussion. "Interesting lyrics. I never really followed those types of songs, but they do sound rather interesting."

Miyako nods and waves as Merek makes his way out. "Yeah, some of these can be a bit melancholy," she muses. "You get those moods, especially on the north-eastern coast. You ever visit one of those little fishing villages, where most people live the same way their great-great-grandparents did, even if the boats have engines and radios and such now? Where the fog rolls in in the autumn, and when you stand on the pier all you can hear is the waves rolling and the bells of the channel bouys? Or looked out on a winter evening to watch the snow falling, with everything hushed as if there was nothing else in the world at all?"

Waving to Merek, Kotono looks to Miyako and nods. "I kind of do, yeah. Sometimes I wish I could just have a simple room with simple music playing. Nice and comfortable with weather that's comfortable for staying inside in. Got a nice book or maybe playing a board game with someone." She looks up a little, starting to fantasize.

Miyako nods, "That does sound fun. To just sit back and relax for a while... Share some time with a loved one, or family..." She sighs softly and reaches up to take Kotono's hand again. "I wish we could take that time now."

Kotono doesn't resist Miyako taking her hand. "I wish we could too. Someplace nice and peaceful. Alone together..." She is clearly starting to daydream a bit more as she loses touch with reality, apparently getting wrapped up in her own thoughts.

Miyako nods, "Maybe we can buy a place here and rebuild it... set things up..." She gives Kotono's hand a squeeze and sinks back in her seat. "Maybe sitting in an onsen, watching the snowflakes tumbling down, with warmed kimonos and hot drinks waiting for us inside..."
